THE INTERVIEW with the Main Post
Exciting East-West-Meeting
Back from the future: Christine Dumbsky about her China-Exhibiton

Sommerach, it was an unusual cultural exchange: The Sommerach artist Christine Dumbsky attended an international exhibition in Tianjin/China. We were talking with her about her journey.
How did you cope with the change of time?
I had no problems with this. Since the Chinese do live in the future, I just directly came back from the future.
How was it possible to exhibit in China?

The contact to the Hua Cui Chinese Artists Community/Tianjin was set up over the internet. The principal of the Hua Cui school, Mr. Zhou Yan, did contact me about three years ago the first time by sending an email. Time after time a closer contact developed as well as the idea that I could attend an exhibition was born.

What is the diploma about, that you got last year?
It's rather a diploma than a honour membership that I was given by the Hua Cui Chinese Artists Association, for my support of the Chinese artists.
Which impressions did you take with you from your journey?

First of all many, so that I am doing hard to describe in a few words.
Artistically it was a great enrichment to gain a bit of an insight into the artistic work of the Chinese artists.
Eastern art facing western art is full of suspense tension and I wish that it would be possible to show this in Germany too. The Language, the characters of the written words seem quite strange to us, although some of the characters are fascinating logical and somehow simple and picturesque reduced. In any way the writing of the Chinese is very close to painting.

What was the opinion in China about your art-works?

Naturally there was discussion, but as far as I have been told, my paintings were accepted. I as well have been told by Email afterwards, that at the school there is no other theme at the moment, when it comes to my paintings.
Which paintings I did exhibit, as well as a photo documentary, can be viewed at my website at www.webparadise.com.

How international was the event?

Except the national artists and art professors, as well artists from Finland, USA, Austria, Japan and me (for Germany) participated. Later I had the chance to see some of them at the school again. To attend the art-lessons and work there was a wonderful experience.

Surely a dream was fulfilled with the China-Trip?

I am very happy, that I have been there. It was quite an amount of work not only regarding the preparations before the trip, but it turned out that it was rewarding. To be in China was a very important experience, which will for sure influence my new paintings.

What can we Europeans learn from China?

That art can overcome borders and open doors. The Chinese already have realised this.
The Chinese do have a highly developed talent for organising, they are very disciplined as well as inquisitive and interested as well as Chinese artists do have a fascinating painting technique and wonderful paintings.

What was most surprising for you, while being in China?

That we are all the same - emotionally.
The distinctive kindness of the people.
Although China is not a rich country, everything was done very properly to provide our stay as comfortable and interesting as possible.

Is art able get over language barriers?

Definite a big YES!

Will there be a lasting contact in the future or was it just a unique co-operation?

Since we had a close contact and good company all the time already, I think it will be at last more intensively in the future. It would be just wonderful to push and support this art exchange a bit more further.
As already said before, China is not a rich country and it would be helpful and welcome, if there could be a financial support from third side to make it possible to extend and establish the art exchange.
Also it could be conceivable to set up a comparably exhibit in Germany.

This is mainly a question of covering costs to set up some plan like this, right?

To me it is clear, that this can only be done, when official help will be given as well as sponsors would be involved, too.
I would very much appreciate, if somebody appeals to the idea and offers support and assistance to make a plan like this reality.
